SCIENCE ONLINE VANCOUVER #1
Where do you get your science?
Practically every day, the internet gives us another option for finding scientific information. In addition to peer-reviewed journals and mainstream media, we now read blogs and wield heaps of social media tools like Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube. More sources publishing more content more frequently! How do we keep up? How do we know where to go for relevant, accurate science?
Our speakers, UBC microbiologist and #arseniclife investigator Rosie Redfield, a local reporter and a mediator/moderator will ignite a conversation about finding science online.
A little bit more about our panelists:
- Rosie Redfield – Named Nature’s most influential person of 2011, this associate professor of microbiology at UBC hit science fame through her blog RRResearch disputing NASA’s claim life exists in arsenic.
- Lisa Johnson - Multiplatform journalist with a keen interest in environment and science stories. She enjoys digging, storytelling, and finding context in breaking news.
- Anthony Floyd – aerospace research engineer with a PhD in Civil Engineering from UBC. Although strictly a digital immigrant, Anthony grew up with technology as technology grew up. He is quite active in social media. Anthony’s a proud dad to two boys, year-round bike commuter, opinionated political observer, and Maritimer-in-exile.
If you can’t attend in person, follow the conversations on Twitter using the #SoVan hashtag! The LIVESTREAM is at http://new.livestream.com/scioWC/soVAN1

Write us your thoughts. Play nice.

Sad that I can’t make it to this one. Looking forward to the next, and wishing you all the best with this initiative.

Great job Catherine, Peter, and Sarah. Looks awesome! Unfortunately, won’t be able to make the inaugural event, as I’ve got to invigilate a final exam. Will try and send science scout-ish folks over though.
Hi all,
I’m excited that Dr Rosie Redfield will be talking about open science, she’s an excellent and well-spoken advocate. I had the pleasure recently of doing a mini-documentary about her arsenic life work (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFdYL9-myqo). During the interview she said a lot of interesting things about her open research approach, but we couldn’t include them in the video (I wrote some more about it on my blog (http://hayleydunning.wordpress.com/2012/02/23/dr-rosie-redfield-her-pink-hair-and-challenging-nasa/)
Anyway, I hope you don’t see this as self-promotion, I don’t really mean it to be, just though I’d provide some interesting context! It should be a great evening, looking forward to the dialogue.
